REGULATIONS FOR RTTEU TRAIL RUNNING EVENTS

EVENT CHARACTER/CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

RTTEU trail running events are designed to challenge participants in a solo format, ensuring an individual journey through diverse and often demanding terrains. All participants must meet specific minimum age requirements to ensure safety and suitability for the challenges ahead.  The minimum age of participants is declared during the registration process.

Each route could include high alpine sections, where absolute surefootedness on alpine paths and trails is crucial. Participants should possess the skills necessary to navigate these routes, which may feature segments secured with ropes or other safety equipment.

It is essential for participants to be well-versed in reading topographical maps and utilising GPS technology. However, reliance on technology should not replace fundamental navigational skills. Participants must be capable of finding their way in all terrains independently, even when confronted with adverse weather conditions and limited visibility.

By signing the declaration of liability, participants confirm their physical fitness for the sport, and they are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their health and safety. Those with any pre-existing medical conditions, injuries, or doubts about their fitness should carefully consider their decision to participate.

AUTONOMY

Participants must understand that they will be on their own during the event. Each individual is responsible for navigating the route without assistance from others. It is imperative to carry adequate food and hydration supplies throughout the event. Participants should plan accordingly to ensure they can sustain themselves during the race, as support will be limited to checkpoints and refreshment points.

Participants are also reminded that on the longer courses they may be running in darkness and so should be prepared to do such.

COURSE CONDITIONS

Given the unpredictable nature of weather, participants should be prepared for sudden changes in conditions. If safety becomes a concern, the event organisers reserve the right to modify portions of the route or replace sections with alternative paths on short notice. Participants are encouraged to check the official event website regularly for updates regarding route conditions, safety information, and any changes to the race schedule.

AREAS OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY

This regulation aims to protect areas of natural beauty and environmental sensitivity during the trail running event. It establishes guidelines to minimize ecological impact, preserve wildlife habitats, and maintain the integrity of the landscape.

Natural Beauty Areas: Regions characterized by scenic landscapes, unique geological features, or significant aesthetic value.

Environmental Sensitivity Areas: Locations that possess fragile ecosystems, endangered species habitats, or critical natural resources.

All participants must remain on marked trails and paths to prevent soil erosion and protect vegetation.  Participants are required to carry out all personal waste, including food wrappers and other litter. Designated waste disposal stations will be provided at checkpoints.  Participants must not disturb wildlife or their habitats. Contact with animals is prohibited, and any sightings should be reported to event staff.   To minimize disturbance to wildlife and fellow participants, loud noises, including music, are prohibited.

Environmental Awareness:

Participants must read a pre-race briefing that includes information on local ecosystems, wildlife, and the importance of conservation efforts. This will also be communicated in the race brief.

Event organizers will designate trail monitors to ensure compliance with these regulations and address any concerns.

An environmental impact assessment will be conducted after the event to evaluate any damage and inform future planning.

Participants found in violation of these regulations may face penalties, including disqualification from the event, fines, or bans from future events.

The event will involve local environmental organizations to promote awareness and encourage volunteer efforts for trail maintenance and conservation.

This regulation will be subject to approval by local authorities and can be amended as necessary to adapt to changing environmental conditions and community feedback.

CATEGORIES OF PARTICIPATION

The event will feature several categories based on age and gender to promote inclusivity and fair competition. These categories may include divisions for men, women, and various age groups. There is no minimum requirement for participation in any category, and all participants will be recognized during the awards ceremony, regardless of their category.

START NUMBER ASSIGNMENT

Upon registration, each participant will receive a non-transferrable start number, which must be worn visibly throughout the race. The start number must not be altered or removed, as it is essential for timekeeping and identification purposes. Participants are required to present a signed declaration of liability and valid identification at the time of registration to receive their start number.

TIMEKEEPING MECHANISM

A transponder chip integrated into the start number or via GPS will accurately track each participant’s running time. In the event that the transponder is malfunctioning or lost, participants must report this issue immediately at the nearest checkpoint or to the race office to ensure their time is recorded accurately.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

The high mountain environment can present rapidly changing weather patterns, necessitating that participants come equipped with appropriate clothing and gear. The following mandatory items must either be worn or carried for the entirety of the event. Equipment checks will be conducted prior to the start and at designated checkpoints.

Mandatory Equipment Includes:

Footwear: Trail running shoes with profiled soles for optimal traction.

Backpack: A running backpack capable of carrying essential supplies.

Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof jacket that does not replace warm clothing.

Insulating Layer: Warm clothing, including a long-sleeved top, spare T-shirt, long trousers, or leg warmers, ensuring no skin is exposed.

Accessories: Gloves, a beanie or headband, and headgear for sun protection.

Safety Gear: A fully functional head torch, a folding cup or water container for drinks, and a water container with a minimum capacity – 100km 1.5l   /  50km – 1l  /  25km – 0.75l.

Nutritional Supplies: Adequate food supplies (approximately 500 kcal as emergency provisions), with all food packaging clearly labelled with the participant’s start number.

Emergency Equipment: At least one elastic bandage, an emergency whistle, and a rescue blanket.

Navigation Tools: A route map stored on a navigation device, and a mobile phone with emergency contact numbers programmed in.

The event organisers will provide a finalised list of mandatory equipment based on the anticipated weather conditions at least the evening prior to the event.  This could also change in response to changes in governing body regulations.

BRIEFINGS AND START PROCEDURES

Participants will receive comprehensive information about the race routes and schedule one week before the event. This information is crucial for understanding race logistics and safety protocols. On the day of the event, participants must report to the starting area at least 30 minutes prior to the official start time of the race into which they are registered.

NEUTRALISED START

A neutralised start is designed to ensure the safety and organisation of the race. During this phase, participants are not permitted to overtake the lead vehicle. This rule is in place to maintain order and prevent any dangerous situations that might arise from excessive speed or competition before the official start. All participants must adhere to this regulation to ensure a fair and safe environment for everyone involved.

MARKING OF THE COURSE

The route will be thoroughly marked by our experienced team using various methods such as chalk spray, road signs, barrier tape, and flags. These markings are essential for guiding participants along the designated path.  However, due to unforeseen circumstances, such as vandalism, severe weather conditions, or natural events like fog or snow, some markings may be removed or obscured. We appreciate your understanding regarding these potential issues. It is important to note that once the time limit for the race has expired, the course will be immediately closed, and all markings will be removed promptly to ensure the safety of participants, the integrity of the course, and in respect of the local environment.

CHECKPOINTS AND REFRESHMENT POINTS

The race will feature multiple checkpoints and refreshment points strategically placed along the route to support participants. Each refreshment station will provide a variety of drinks and fruit to keep participants hydrated and energised. Depending on weather conditions, hot drinks may also be available at selected locations. Participants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the exact locations of these refreshment stations, as they will be detailed on the route map and numbered for easy identification. At each checkpoint, participants will be scanned in the order they arrive, ensuring an accurate record of their progress. It is crucial that all participants pass through each checkpoint; failure to do so, such as by taking shortcuts or becoming lost, will result in disqualification from the race.

TIME LIMITS / FINISH

Cut-off times for the race will be clearly published and are binding for all participants. The race organiser retains the authority to adjust these cut-off times if necessary, particularly in response to changing weather conditions that could impact safety or the ability to complete the course. Participants should be aware that race officials, including the race director, route staff, medical personnel, and final runners, have the authority to remove any participant from the race if they are unable to reach a cut-off time. It is the responsibility of each participant to manage their pace and ensure they are able to complete the course within the established time limits.

TIME PENALTIES AND DISQUALIFICATION

Participants must understand that violations of race rules will result in time penalties ranging from 5 to 120 minutes, or in some cases, disqualification. It is important to note that the entry fee will not be refunded in cases of disqualification. To avoid penalties, participants must comply with all race regulations, including adhering to the Mandatory Equipment List, following the guidelines outlined in the regulations, and ensuring that they do not have any health issues or use prohibited substances (doping). Participants are required to follow all instructions from official personnel and adhere to local road traffic regulations. Additionally, participants must carry mandatory equipment throughout the race, and no control may be refused on the route. Environmental responsibility is also emphasized; participants must avoid polluting the surroundings and must not take shortcuts—ensuring that all checkpoints are passed is mandatory. Lastly, mutual assistance in emergencies is expected and encouraged.

WITHDRAWAL FROM THE RACE

If a participant chooses to withdraw from the race for any reason, it is imperative that they report their decision immediately to the nearest marshal or race management. This step is crucial to avoid the initiation of potentially costly and elaborate search operations that may occur if a participant’s absence goes unreported. Participants should be aware that once they have withdrawn from the race, there is no entitlement to a transfer to another event or to any refunds.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY CARE

The safety of all participants is of utmost importance. Therefore, medical services will be available along the entire route until the last participant has finished. In the event of a medical emergency, participants must contact race management immediately.

All participants are encouraged to provide first aid to others in distress, as this is a fundamental aspect of sportsmanship and community in the race. Participants should not be concerned about the time lost while providing assistance; this time will be credited as necessary. It is important to understand that unforeseen circumstances in nature may delay immediate medical assistance, and participants are expected to exercise personal responsibility and self-discipline. Ideally, medical assistance will be sought at a checkpoint or refreshment station.

Medical personnel reserve the right to disqualify and remove participants from the race if they are deemed unable to continue safely or if their health is at risk. Additionally, medical staff are authorized to perform examinations, check mandatory equipment, and transport or evacuate participants in need of medical attention to the nearest appropriate facility.

The costs for a possible deployment for appropriate rescue are to be borne by the participant.

RACE ORGANIZATION – communiqué sur multiples supports.

EMERGENCY CALL 122

The race organization number is available on the route maps and on the back of the start number. If the race organization cannot be reached, the emergency number 112 must be contacted immediately in the event of an emergency.

DOPING REGULATIONS

The integrity of competition is paramount, and any instance of doping will lead to the immediate disqualification of the participant involved. This includes the use of performance-enhancing substances or methods that violate established guidelines. Specifically, intravenous infusions are strictly prohibited unless a valid therapeutic use exemption has been obtained. This rule applies regardless of the circumstances, including instances of exercise-induced dehydration, where participants may seek to enhance recovery. Medical applications must be thoroughly justified and compliant with the relevant regulatory authority’s guidelines. Doping controls can be conducted at any time, ensuring a level playing field for all competitors.

HELP FROM OUTSIDE

Participants are expected to compete independently, and assistance from external sources—including spectators, supporters, or fellow participants—is strictly prohibited. This regulation is in place to maintain fairness and integrity during the event. Accepting any form of drinks or food from helpers while on the course is not allowed, with the sole exception being official refreshment points designated by the organizing body. It is important to adhere to these guidelines to avoid potential penalties. However, in cases of falls, injuries, or other emergency situations, participants are permitted to accept help in the form of food, drinks, or replacement clothing at any time, as the priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

Participants are expected to show a strong commitment to environmental stewardship throughout the event. It is critical that all waste is disposed of responsibly, specifically at designated refreshment points. Participants must refrain from deliberately damaging the natural surroundings, as preserving the environment is a shared responsibility. To further promote accountability, any food or drinks carried by participants must be clearly labeled with their identification number. This measure helps to ensure that waste can be appropriately managed and that participants are held accountable for their actions.

GENERAL RULES

All participants must comply with the road traffic regulations applicable in the area where the event takes place. This includes adhering to any instructions provided by law enforcement and official event staff. Participants must remain on the designated route at all times, as taking shortcuts or selecting alternative routes is strictly forbidden. Each participant accepts the inherent risks associated with the activity and must exercise caution, especially in situations that may become unclear or dangerous.

The use of escort vehicles or bicycles to provide support during the event is not allowed. Any interference caused by such vehicles may result in penalties or disqualification for the participant being supported. It is essential to maintain the integrity of the competition and the safety of all participants.

Supporters of participants are also expected to act responsibly and ethically. They must not engage in behaviours that pollute or damage the natural environment, including actions such as spraying or painting on the route. Any violations of these environmental standards will result in immediate disqualification for both the participants involved and their supporters. Additionally, participants are required to properly dispose of any rubbish, such as food packaging, bottles, or cups, at designated locations rather than in nature. Participants who choose to start with equipment such as poles must carry them to the finish line; conversely, those who start without poles may not receive them along the course.

To enhance safety, fixed mechanical connections between participants are not permitted. All participants and teams are required to demonstrate respect, sportsmanship, and fairness throughout the event. This includes treating fellow competitors and officials with dignity and adhering to the spirit of competition.

PROTESTS

In the interest of fairness and accountability, participants have the right to submit a protest regarding any perceived rule violations or decisions made by event management. Protests must be filed at the designated race office within one hour of the event’s conclusion. Participants must provide the names of any witnesses to support their claims. A designated jury will review the protest and make a determination within 24 hours. It is important that all cited witnesses are present during the review process. A protest fee may be required at the time of submission, which will be retained by the organizing body if the protest is ultimately rejected.

TERMINATION

The organizing body reserves the right to terminate agreements with individual participants at any point until the official conclusion of the event. This right of withdrawal ensures that the organizers can maintain the integrity and safety of the event. Additionally, the management retains the authority to amend these regulations as necessary. Participants will be informed of any significant changes that may impact their involvement.

FINAL NOTE

For clarity and readability, the masculine form has been used throughout this document; however, all information is inclusive of all genders. The emphasis on respect, fairness, and environmental responsibility is fundamental to creating a positive experience for all participants and stakeholders involved.
